We expose the truth behind The Secret War in Vietnam including bombing raids conducted every 8 Minutes day and night for nine solid years over the country of Laos.

This is the Story of the Most Heavily Bombed Country in the World and the Hope that Drives a People Towards a Brighter Future

President Kennedy 1961 – Before the Vietnam War

1961 US President John F Kennedy claiming all he wants is peace in Laos during the War in Vietnam

“The security of all South East Asia will be in danger if Laos loses its Neutral independence. I want to make it clear to the American People and to all the world that all we want in Laos is peace, not war.”

United States President John Kennedy

In 1964 the United States government began secretly bombing the country of Laos without the approval of Congress, without the knowledge of the American people and without any rules of engagement.

Even though the Geneva Accord of ’62 forbade the presence of any foreign military in Laos and both Peace in Laos, 14 Nations Sign Neutrality Pact during the war in vietnam America and the North Vietnamese were signatories too it, neither country adhered to the accord.

The US conducted a covert war in an effort to stop the growing Communist movement within Laos and crush the North Vietnamese supply line of the Ho Chi Minh trail.

The Laotian people were bombed every eight minutes, day and night, for nine solid years.

A total of 580,000 bombing missions were conducted, with each mission dropping hundreds of explosives at a time. The civilian death count was astronomical.

“It was the first war really where most of the fighting was conducted by bombardment, so the Lao people didn’t even see their enemy, all they saw was a plane travelling very fast or bombs just impacting on the ground and going off.”

Laith Stevens Explosive Ordinance Demolition (EOD) Technician

And now 35 years later, the bombs remain

Out of the 2 million tons of bombs that were dropped on Laos, approximately 30% didn’t explode. They just litter the entire country, sitting in wait for a single knock to set them off.

13,000 people have been killed or injured by these relics of destruction. And now these casualties are on the rise... almost half of these deaths are children.

“Multi-layered…gripping…it bites deep into the wounds of the Vietnam war and America's secretive bombing campaign… the story is personal as well as global… The touches of down to earth Aussie humour seem entirely appropriate amidst the danger and the destruction that was caused… Bomb Harvest is a significant work that touches on all the ugly politics of war.”

See the film that every member of the US Congress has!

"The US Campaign to ban Landmines and Cluster Bombs in early 2009 thought this film important enough to send a DVD of the Award Winning full feature length version of Bomb Harvest to all 536 US Senators. In the hope that they see the devastation and unintended consequences on civilian populations that the act of WAR can have, even 35 years after the last bomb was dropped. THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY."

Former US Air Force pilot

“The utter destruction of Laos is unbelievable. Whatever moved was bombed. There was no way a plane could distinguish, whether it was a truck, whether it was a man on a bicycle, whether it was a man out ploughing his fields or the currents in the river, it was bomb phase, upon bomb phase, upon bomb phase…”

“Bomb Harvest vividly depicts the consequences of war and the unimaginable bravery of those trying to clear up the mess…Powerful and compelling…a truly inspiring film.”

The Award Winning Film Bomb Harvest Exposes the Real Secrets of the Vietnam War, the Bombs that were Left Behind and the Children of Laos that are Still Suffering

Immediately gripping, Bomb Harvest begins with a 500-pound live bomb lying in the ground behind a village school. The massive bomb is old, it’s rusty and it looks anything but dangerous.

But looks can be deceiving. With one wrong knock the bomb could go off, evaporating everything – and everyone - into a “pink mist”.

The school children crowd around while Australian bomb disposal500 pound unexploded bomb lodged in the ground in Laos specialist Laith Stevens examines the bomb, the situation and the immediate threat it has on everyone surrounding it.

There is no media reporting this shocking scene, there is no great panic in the town... and there is no easy solution because millions of bombs, just like this one, line the soil of Laos.

“Thoroughly entertaining despite its grisly subject matter…conveys its messages subtly and skillfully…Moving…and quite often laugh-out-loud funny. Stevens is a wonderful character: nerveless, affable, empathetic …and a larrikin to boot….There are some 'you must be kidding' moments as the trainees attempt to dismantle 500 pound bombs, any of which could turn them into 'pink mist' with one false move…One of the best movies I've seen this year.”

1969 - 5 years into the secret US bombing of Laos

1969 US President Nixon denying secret US bombings during the war in Vietnam

“The people in the United States are entitled to know everything they possibly can with regards to any involvement of the United States abroad… I pointed out what were the facts. There are NO AMERICAN COMBAT TROOPS (pause composes himself) in Laos.”

United States President Nixon 1969

The “Secret War” That Did More Damage than Anyone Could Have Ever Predicted

When the covert war was raging 35 years ago no one could have predicted that it would be the bombs that didn’t go off that would cause the most problems decades later... but that is exactly what happened.

Much of Laos is unable to be farmed or developed due to the fact that people blow themselves up trying to cultivate the land. This, with a combination of several other issues has lead Laos to become one of the poorest countries in the world.

This level of poverty has forced the locals to risk their lives and collect these bombs to sell for scrap metal.

In Laos, as in most third world countries, children are responsible for helping to feed the family from a very young age and selling bomb scrap is an easy way to buy food and  help pay for their education

Because of this bomb harvest it has become a deadly race for time, with bomb disposal specialist working against the clock to get to the bombs before more innocent men, women and children are needlessly killed.

But because there are literally millions of live bombs covering Laos, there are simply not enough teams to handle the work.

Bomb Harvest exposes this life-threatening problem and follows a team of brave men training to dispose of the bombs that are endangering their families, their country and their own lives.

“Bomb Harvest skillfully weaves together the drama of the bomb disposal team’s work, stunning archival footage and the locals’ experience to explore how the trauma of the bombing lives on 35 years later.”

Onscreen: RealTime magazine

Bomb Harvest is a rare, white-knuckle look at the post-apocalyptic world that the Laotian people and the bomb disposal specialists face day in and day out.

Mixed with archival footage, up-close shots of the bomb disposal team’s work and personal accounts, Bomb Harvest is a compelling and jaw-dropping account of the casualties of war.

This incredibly powerful film exposes the truth about a deadly and covert mission that most people never knew existed while revering the Lao ability to find humor in horrific circumstances.

But there is a chance that this amazing story of war, recovery and the unimaginable bravery of those trying to clear up the mess will never be told.

And that is why we need your help...

The Secret War in Vietnam presents the Award Winning Documentary Bomb Harvest

“Wildly entertaining…breathlessly tense…Kim Mordaunt has taken on the most delicate of subjects…with warmth, humour and richness…Stevens is a lovable larrikin…full of hokum and  charm, and the camera loves him…a lovely film.”

Brian Duff, FilmInk

"Like so many films, the idea for Bomb Harvest was born in a bar after a long night of drinking"

The Director and Producer of the Award Winning Documentary Bomb HarvestHello, my name is Sylvia Wilczynski and I am the Producer for Bomb Harvest. About four years ago my partner and Director Kim Mordaunt and I were in Laos travelling when fate intervened.

We were out at a bar when we happened to meet a pair of Australian bomb experts. The guys opened up to us about their jobs, about their lives, about the war and about the live bombs that endanger Laos.

Kim and I were amazed by the courage, horrified by the situation and inspired to help. We decided right then and there to make Laos the subject of our next film.

But from start this project was met with much resistance. Investors were skeptic, insurance companies were wary, and the Laos government was understandably suspicious of the media.

Hard work and persistence paid off and we finally made the film that we set out to make.

Now there is one more challenge we face, and that is distributing the documentary around the world and to get it in front of as many people as possible.

You Can Help Spread the Story of the Laos Children Growing Up With Live Bombs in Their Backyard

Children of Laos dreaming of a safer future

As filmmakers we wanted our film to reach as wide an audience as possbile and at the same time we wanted to do something totaly different.

Instead of big profits going back to the studio and to shareholders, we wanted a big part of the profits to go back into the Laos community.

That’s why we decided to distribute this film through our website exclusively and give:

  • 10% of the total sale of all sales to MAG (an organization who works to dispose of Unexploded Ordinance in Laos - www.mag.org.uk )
  • 20% of the total sale from some DVD’s will go to other partners (including humanitarian organizations) who help distribute the film
  • 10% of total profits will go directly towards special projects to help children within Laos

And because we don’t have the backing of a big studio and their distribution network, and because we don’t have the marketing this film deserves... we are asking you to help us tell this amazing story.

Send this website to your friends and your family. Let them know about the secret war, the children that are forced to play on land littered with millions of bombs and the heroic acts of bomb experts who are risking everything to help these people in their hour of need.

These bombs don’t belong to us please take them back

“They don’t belong to us, I want them to take them back”

This Film Was a Labor Of Love for a Country and a People Who Need It The Most
